    Notes From Your Dance Partner

Over the last couple of days, I did one of my favorite things–hiding away in a comfy chair and reading as much as I could. Many have an idea that ministers just sit in their study and read books all day; the truth is that I really have to intentionally make time and space to read. My wife constantly comments about how many books arrive at our house; the challenge is reading everything that I have a hunger and desire to read. The last few days, I picked some books and just powered through as many as I could, like a woman on a mission. You can see all the recent books I’ve been reading in the picture below.

A few I picked because they may be helpful in some sermon series that I’m exploring for this year. In particular, I’m doing a number of services in the run-up to the election to counter the high amount of anxiety that we’re all carrying; right now, the working title is “Hope in a Handbasket.” Some I picked because I’d been hearing a lot of buzz around them. Some of them I’m reading to see if there may be some good sermons in there. Some I wanted as continuing education around topics I’ve already been exploring, and a couple just because they intrigued me.

The one book that is staying with me is Rebecca Solnit’s “A Paradise Built In Hell.” In short, it gave me hope in a realistic, comprehensive and researched way. She has done extensive research on the human responses to the aftermaths of disasters like earthquakes, 9/11, and fires. Over and over, she found that government systems failed and the media looked for the worst in people and stirred up panic, but that the actual responses of humans was of building community, improvising, helping and creating what she called a “utopia,” where class, race, gender and other differences were put aside and mutual aid and compassion ruled.

And oh, how I needed this hope. You’ll probably be hearing more about this and other sources of hope for me these days. I hope that, today, you can find your own corner to learn and be inspired as well.

Close the Gap – Almost There!

Help Us Close the Gap in Our Giving!

To support our values and fulfill our commitments, we need your help to reach our budget goal. We’re operating on a zero-balance budget and making necessary sacrifices, but we can’t do it alone.

At our annual meeting on June 9, we approved a budget of $610,000. We are currently just $1,200 short of this goal.

We need 4 more pledging units to contribute $300/year or $25/month. Or we need 8 more pledging units to contribute $150/year or $12.50/month to Close the Gap and reach our 2024/2025 budget goal.

    How to Help:

    • Email: closethegap@phoenixuu.org
    • Include your name and the additional amount you wish to pledge.
    • If you have auto payments through your bank, please adjust them after notifying us.
    • If you haven’t made a pledge yet, please email us, and we’ll get you set up.
    • Every contribution counts and helps our UUCP community thrive.

Thank you for your generosity and support!

    Notes From Your Dance Partner

I am back from some wonderful time with family in Indiana and celebrating my wife Karen’s 60th birthday with friends–what a lovely and rejuvenating time off.

I also just came back from a week as the Minister of the UU Senior High camp at Camp deBenneville Pines. How lucky I am that this congregation sees that as part of my ministry. This year, I can tell you that I worked HARD; there were a lot of “growth opportunities” at camp, but it is also such fulfilling work that I do, supporting the youth as they run their own programming and being part of the adult staff team.

I am working this week, catching up on a bunch of things and starting our preparations for next year. Then next week, I’ll be heading to Albuquerque with Benjie Messer (who will be back from sabbatical–YEAH!) for the Association of UU Music Ministries annual meeting. I’m thrilled that we’re driving  and Benjie and I will have 16 hours together in a car to catch him up on everything that has happened the last seven months.

I want to mention that this week we’ve had some big political news. I am guessing that we have a wide range of opinions on all of it in our congregation, as I do. One thing regarding my Unitarian Universalism is being aware of increased racist and misogynistic actions and words. However you vote, I hope you will speak up with your friends and family when you hear language that goes against our values. I am planning some worship services around the anxious times surrounding the election–I am hoping they will help us (myself included) cope with the myriad feelings we might have.

I’m glad to be back and excited for an amazing year with UUCP. Stay safe in this heat and know you are loved more than you know.

  • UUCP Summer 2024 Construction Project

    UUCP Summer 2024 Construction Project

Phase One of Construction is underway, and our building is undergoing massive changes! Here is what you need to know!

The deadline for handing over keys to our new tenants is August 9th so things will be changing rapidly. These communications will be to keep everyone in the loop as things shift and adapt over the next three or four weeks.

The biggest change is with our toddlers. Since rooms are deconstructing and moving, there will be no dedicated and safe space for our littlest friends during July. Let’s be extra welcoming and radically inclusive as they join the adults and children in the sanctuary during services.

Room 9 is now both storage and ready for meetings for Adult programming during the construction phase.

All rooms beyond room 9 are under construction and closed off to our community. There is signage on all the doors to that effect. Please respect the boundaries for the safety of all.

While we’d love to complete the bigger projects sooner than later, we will be fiscally responsible in waiting until we’ve raised those funds to proceed, so pledging and paying in increments or later in the year is just fine. Please email your intention of support to renovation@phoenixuu.org. Or if you’re ready to pledge or donate now, you can access the pledge form directly.
