Fortunately, both the AZ House and the AZ Senate have voted to waive the spending limit for public schools, so they will now be able to operate through this school year. This is only a “Band-aid” fix. It’s clear that many members of the Legislature are hostile to public education, as shown in bills that, for instance:
- Require teachers to submit all teaching materials for approval
- Control what’s being taught
- Don’t allow schools to institute mask or vaccination mandates
- Withdraw access to the arts for many students
Let’s remember that teachers are well-educated professionals, some of whom are choosing to leave AZ or leave the profession entirely. They need our support. Watch for more actions to come.
