UUCP offers adult classes on a variety of topics that are consistent with UUCP’s mission to be a spiritual community for our time: theologically diverse, radically Inclusive, and justice centered. Most of our classes are given on Sundays after the service, and many are offered in a hybrid format that allows in person and Zoom participation.

Classes are offered most weeks during the program year, September – May, with a reduced schedule during the summer. We post our classes as they become available. Please consider attending one or all of them! (Note: Some classes require registration, but most do not.) Feel free to contact us at afd@phoenixuu.org with any questions.

We currently have no adult classes scheduled. Please check back later or contact afd@phoenixuu.org if you would like to suggest a class.

Ongoing Adult Classes

Old Words, Good Words, Helpful Words

When times are hard, it can be helpful to look back at ancient texts for wisdom and strength.

In these sessions we’ll delve into some writings from the Hebrew Bible, what Jews call the Tanakh and Christians call the Old Testament.

  • The first session will look at selections from the prophets, e.g. Isaiah, Ezekiel, and Amos, who spoke truth to power when rulers were oppressive. We will also explore the role and function of a prophet in the Hebrew Bible.
  • The second session will see what the book of Job has to say about why bad things happen to good people and how to respond to that reality.
  • The third session will examine Ecclesiastes, which speaks directly to the question of what gives meaning to life. Its surprisingly non-judgemental advice is to enjoy life as it comes.

These classes will be led by UUCP members Blake Rushing, who is seminary-trained and served as a minister for 10 years, and Gary Ezzell.
